What is UA Reforged?
A fan remaster of Urban Assault (1998). It runs the original game on a modern open-source engine, then adds things: a smarter enemy commander, radio chatter, and a New Look with hand-built vehicles, host stations, effects and graphics presets. There is also a standalone VR edition for the Meta Quest 3.
Is this an official Microsoft project?
No. It is an unofficial, non-commercial fan project. Urban Assault and its designs belong to Microsoft. The engine underneath is OpenUA, an open-source re-implementation by Marisa-Chan.
Is it free?
Yes. Nothing is sold, and nothing will be. Fan projects under Microsoft's Game Content Usage Rules have to stay non-commercial, and we're happy with that.
Can I download it?
Not yet. The Downloads page lists what's coming: the engine (with full GPLv2 source), the New Look model pack and a few smaller packs. Every one of them will need your own copy of Urban Assault.
Do I need the original game?
Yes. We will never ship the 1998 game data, and we don't link to it. Our downloads are our own engine and packs; you point them at your own copy. Which copies the installer accepts is still being worked out.
Does it include Metropolis Dawn?
The engine runs the Metropolis Dawn campaigns (Ghorkov and Taerkasten), and the New Look includes remastered Metropolis Dawn units like the Kettenfahrzeug, Thor's Hammer and the Crusher. You need the expansion data yourself.
Mac, Windows, Quest?
Mac: yes, built and played on Apple Silicon (M2 Max, M4). Windows: a Reforged 0.6 installer was built and tested once on a gaming PC; the New Look has no Windows build yet. Quest: a standalone Quest 3 build runs at 120 Hz. Linux, Intel Macs, Quest 2/3S and PC VR are untested.
Will it run on my machine?
On an M2 Max MacBook Pro every preset runs with headroom, and a Mac mini M4 does about 100 fps at 4K on High in a busy city level. We don't have minimum specs yet. A first-launch benchmark picks a preset for you.
Can I play it exactly like 1998?
Yes. That's the Original preset: pixel-identical to the 1998 game, checked frame by frame. And the Classic 0.5 build never changes.
Does it change the gameplay?
The visual remaster doesn't. Models swap in at the same size and fire points, and collisions live in the game scripts. The AI commander in Reforged 0.6 does play differently (that's the point), and it can be set back to classic.
Can I play online?
Multiplayer works between copies of our engine over a private network; we've played Mac to Mac. It can't cross-play with the original 1998 Windows game. Public servers aren't decided yet.
Did you use AI to make it?
Some, and we'd rather be upfront. Every 3D model is built by hand in Blender with procedural textures; no image-to-3D tools. Early concept reference sheets were made with AI image tools (never pixels in a texture), and early waves used AI upscalers on the original textures, UI and videos for private testing. Those are flagged, kept off the gallery, and will never be offered as downloads. The menu icons are being rebuilt without AI.
What's next?
Fixes from the latest review for shadows, glow, trails, marks and buildings, then the sky rollout and a single graphics-presets build. No dates. We'd rather show it than promise it.
How can I help?
Play-test when builds land, tune the AI commander (its 46 constants live in a plain text file), spot fidelity mistakes against your memory of the originals, or share old screenshots, box art and manuals. The Contribute page has the details.
Who's behind it?
Amelia Aura runs the project, on top of a lot of work by other people: Marisa-Chan's OpenUA engine, the Metropolis Dawn community that kept Urban Assault alive, and of course TerraTools and Microsoft, who made the thing we love in the first place.
Is there a trailer?
A 30-second intro was made and parked. It needs a re-cut without AI backplates before it goes anywhere public. Until then, the clips on this site are straight from the game.
